I am considered by many people to be one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time. I worked with many famous jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington.
I was an advocate for the liberation of black people in the United States and in Africa.
I once said, “I will never again play anything that does not have social significance. We American jazz musicians of African descent have proved beyond all doubt that we are master musicians of our instruments. Now what we have to do is employ our skill to tell the dramatic story of our people and what we’ve been through.”
I died on August 16, 2007, at the age of 83.
