A U.N. report published in January on the Montreal Protocol announced that the hole in the ozone layer is on track to recover by 2040.
Both the northern and southern poles experienced unprecedented heat waves over the same weekend in March. “This Antarctic heat wave definitely changes what we thought was possible for Antarctic weather,” Dr. Jonathan Wille, a postdoctoral researcher in polar meteorology at Université Grenoble Alpes in France, tweeted following the freak event.

The Conference of the Parties, or COP, is an annual gathering of world leaders to discuss one issue that has occupied billions of minds: climate change. This year’s COP26 was held in Glasgow, Scotland, in November 2021. Currently 197 countries participate in the COP. The conference, which was postponed last year because of the pandemic, was considered “a big check-up” to the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.
