The U.S. Department of Agriculture states that 45 percent of food stamp benefits go to children under the age of 18. In February, President Barack Obama signed a bill into law that would cut almost $9 million from the food stamp program.
In 2009, judges Michael Conahan and Mark Ciavarella pled guilty to sending children ages 10 to 18 to juvenile detention centers in exchange for kickbacks from these privately run facilities.
In 2011, almost 400,000 people were deported from the United States and more than 360,000 were detained by ICE. According to a recent report by Race Forward, 22 percent of deported immigrants are parents of children who are U.S. citizens.
