As Democrats take control of the House of Representatives in 2019, they have elected Representative Nancy Pelosi of California as speaker, returning her the honor of being the first woman ever to hold the post, after eight years of Republicans controlling the House. Pelosi pledged that, “this Congress will be transparent, bipartisan and unifying; that we will seek to reach across the aisle in this Chamber and across the divisions across our nation.” For a bill to become law, it has to pass through the House of Representatives and the Senate before being signed off by the president.
