Tell us about yourself.
My name is Maryam Sattaur, and I’m 12 years old. I love reading because I feel like it transports me to a world with so many conflicts that get resolved slowly, piece by piece. It gives me hope in all the dilemmas we see and read about in the world. I also love reading because I learn pieces of information that seem unimportant but later on end up being useful in my life. I also enjoy listening to music and embroidering.

Pretend you’re talking to a kid who has never heard of IndyKids. How would you describe IndyKids and the experience of writing an article?
I would describe IndyKids as an amazing newspaper and something that’s relatable to everyone. The pieces of media produced by IndyKids are fun and interactive. IndyKids is amazing! As for the annual summer camp, I would probably compare it to a roller coaster. It’s thrilling and enjoyable at the same time. The thought of being published in a newspaper and being an interviewer in a podcast is an achievement that makes me proud!

Can you share something you’ve learned from your experience at IndyKids?
I’ve learned many things. For example, I’ve learned the structure of creating a newspaper article. I’ve also learned how to draft interview questions, more skills in researching, etc. I’ve also learned something very important: asking peers and mentors for feedback. With constructive feedback, much can be accomplished!

How do you think being a kid reporter contributes to raising awareness and promoting positive change in your community or the world?
I raise awareness among children and teens as a kid reporter; I give them information in a way that makes it simple but trustworthy. Nowadays clicking on the AI overview is much easier, so having someone like me and my peers — kid reporters — is much better, because misinformation could easily be spread, so information from verified sources is important!
