Hi! My name is Ashley, and I am very passionate about journalism and poetry! I’m kind, empathetic, and love to learn new things! I honor those who came before me, and use my past experiences to shape who I am today!
As a young journalist, what topics are you most passionate about, and why?
Ashley: As a journalist, I am very passionate about issues that resonate with me, such as being confident in who I am, learning about the obstacles facing people of color, and helping educate others on these issues. As a young Black woman, I’ve always felt as if there isn’t enough relatable information for people who look like me, and this is why I continue to write pieces like this. I also love to write poetry! I always write with my emotions and let them take the reins! I love to create a mesmerizing piece that will stay with my readers forever.
Can you share something you’ve learned from your experience at IndyKids?
Ashley: Something I’ve learned from my experience with IndyKids is that writing is…hard. It can be really challenging to find information and structure an article in the right way. I was always so used to writing with my emotions, and never really writing factual pieces.
How do you think being a kid reporter contributes to raising awareness and promoting positive change in your community or the world?
Ashley: As a kid reporter, this title gives us the power to dive deep into our world, find issues that resonate with us, and write about it, no matter how scary it can be. We get to write about topics that most adults can’t discuss, which definitely makes us stand out!
