Getting Wild With…Oysters!

By AMELIA GONZALEZ GINES, age 10

Did you know that oysters have lived for about 15 million years? Wow! For humans, we become adults in 18 years, but oysters become adults in one year, and they can live for up to 20 years.

Oysters are a type of mollusc. Snails and octopuses are also molluscs.

Oysters are important because they are recyclable, which means that if you put their shells back in water and leave them there, they will make homes for baby oysters. Oysters have gills, and that is how they filter water, which also means that they are helping us stop water pollution.

Have you ever heard the joke, “Why don’t oysters share their pearls?… Because they are shellfish”? They are more like humans than you think. They are alive!
