Democracy in Action

By Indykids Staff

This fall U.S. citizens have the chance to vote. Voting is just one small part of a functioning democracy. A democracy is a government ruled by the common people, not just a few wealthy people. In addition to voting, what are some other ways in which the people participate in a democracy?

a) Writing a letter to the editor of a newspaper
b) Writing or calling a government official about an issue
c) Building and being part of a group or organization
d) Signing a petition or gathering signatures for a petition
e) Holding a rally or demonstration
f) All of the above

What is your answer? Do you think the United States is a democracy?
