On Sept. 7, the Senate approved spending $63 billion more for the war in Iraq, bringing the total to $469.7 billion. The funding was approved by 98 out of 100 Senators in spite of increasing public criticism of the war. When the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, President Bush argued that there was a link between then-Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda, the group the U.S. government says is responsible for the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. A Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) report, released on Sept. 8, 2006 found that Hussein had no link to al-Qaeda.
